My Design

A summary of my design choices when prompted with the image on the left and asked to make a simplified model that would be easier for users to interact with successfully.

When redesigning this elevator panel, I thought that simplicity was important. I decided the biggest issues with the original design usability were the layout, as well as the basement level labeling. Marking things with a negative symbol can be confusing. In order to fix this, I chose to change the negative symbol out for the letter B, to signify it is a basement level. If this was not clear enough I also included specific labeling for these buttons, demonstrating that they are basement levels. I labeled floor 1 as the ground floor, because having a floor that is 0, could caused confusion of which is the ground floor. I made the help and door open/close buttons more distinctive as well as a way to avoid confusion between the three. Finally, I made sure to lay out everything in a organized manner, with increasing and decreasing numbers ordered properly. You will also find that the floor numbers are laid out on the panel in a smilier fashion to how they would be within the layout of the building (B4 at the very bottom, 15 at the top). I made sure that all buttons were located further enough away from each other that you will not accidentally press the wrong button.
